in this one...

May be an image of polaroid and grass

In this one (snapshots)

In this one, his hair is longer than it’s been for years, and he’s talking to someone new: A giant of a man, holding a tiny baby while he rocks in a camp chair under the pavilion. These men are both vets, both fathers, making connections over family, faith, and war.  If they have similar scars, you can’t tell from the picture. Today, they are both smiling. There is gray in his dark curls. There is tentative courage in his voice.

In this one, he sits across the picnic table from her, swinging his keys on his finger. He looks out over the water; she looks at his face. She grips her contigo in her hand, trying to hold on to more than just the coffee. She studies his face, she sees the insecurity in his smile as his words come out joking-but-earnest. Heavy motorcycle boots stabilize him as he tries to gather a few thoughts from the chaotic swarm flying all over the lake. She loves having a front seat to his process.

In this one, she is sitting on the cement front porch steps. Her eyes are closed and head is back against the white siding on the house. She’s not aware of the sun on her face but the sounds from indoors: singing lessons. She can hear the piano, the pauses, the instructions “stand up straight! Hands out of your pockets!” She knows she may not sit nearby and gawk so she has found a nearby space, giving them a respectable distance, where she can smile and listen and pray in the sunshine, while teenagers step out into love and risk, with singing.

In this one, he strums the acoustic guitar by the campfire, and even though others are present, he dares to sing. His eyes are closed- perhaps for courage? or to resist the temptation to look at her face to see what she thinks?  She is curled up in a bulky sweatshirt on the camp chair next to him; what will she do with her face? Does she know the power she holds? Before long, she joins her voice to his, and both get stronger. And the one who holds the camera finally exhales.

In this one, she is standing with arms akimbo, knees bent, VR headset and a smile on her face; the garage floor is clean for once. Outside the dog barks at the Amazon delivery truck; a man with a giant box is just doing his job. She hears all this over the roar of the fan and the loud music; she considers pausing to avoid awkwardly being caught in exuberance. She imagines the quick glance and embarrassed smirk that might happen if she gets caught; she’s seen it a hundred times when she keeps dancing at a stoplight.  But the music is too fun and the virtual targets keep coming; why pause when you could be dancing?

In this one, she is wearing a messy bun and workout clothes, sitting on the driveway surrounded by parts of a wheelbarrow, scowling at the instructions. Yesterday she had to ask for help starting the powerwasher. She has wimpy grip strength, and it turns out, a flooding sense of overwhelm when she looks at diagrams with numbers and parts and measurements. She’ll probably decide to write about quitting instead.

these days: your turn

We are loved by a God who is with us, right here, in the details of this day that he has given us.

He meets us here.
But are we here to meet him?
It's easy to ache for the past, or to hurry towards the future. But God meets us here, right here.

Stop, look around, and notice where you are.  Get your bearings, and as best as you can, try to see where this little day is in the big picture. Remember that there IS a big picture, and that there will be a finished story, and that God is the author.  As you move from birth through darkness towards redemption, the days will come and go, but will you notice them? And will you take the time to see Him in them?

What is it like where you stand today?
What trials, what grace do you see? Take time to look around.

Carry God's Word into your day and watch as its colors bounce off everything.

This is the day the Lord has made.
It is a gift. It will pass away.
Much that we love will pass away, and yet, the Word of the Lord stands forever.
Safe are we, kept in that Word.
Safe are we, in His eternal hands, hands strong to save.
Yet where we walk is decidedly unsafe.  Bodies fail here, babies die, addictions consume, and hearts break.  It is easy for us to let the darkness cloud our vision.

We must take and read.
We must sit down, and look up, and pray for softened hearts and opened eyes.

These are the days of battle.
These are the days of uncertainty and fear.
And these are the days of mercy and grace,
the days of clinging to His hand and being upheld by His strength.
For he is our God
and we are the people of his pasture,
    the flock under his care.
Today, if only you would hear his voice,
Do not harden your hearts !

What's happing for you these days?
I'd love to hear your thoughts! (I will post mine tomorrow)

These are the days of waiting for...
These are the days of missing...
These are the days of (doing)..
These are the days of (God's doing)...
These are the days of waiting for God to fix/redeem...
These are the days of inspiration from this song or Scripture...
These are the days of wondering why...
These are the days of gratitude for...

Weekly Challenge: Remind yourself WHY

Are you still trying to make healthy changes?

So am I.  A few of the changes have been fun and rewarding, like finding new recipes the family loves, and starting to see the benefits of exercise.

But sometimes, it is hard to remember why I'm doing this-- like when we all get sick, or when I feel too tired to cook something that requires my brain and attention.  I'm still learning, and because I am still learning, cooking real food and healthy food does not seem easy or natural.

My kitchen is not running on auto-pilot.

After a period of learning and planning, it will get easier, I know it will. I will have a stockpile of healthy convenience foods in my freezer for our difficult weeks. I will know what staples I need, and prepare them regularly without thinking about it.  I will feel like we've been eating this way forever.

But I'm not there yet.
And some days, I want to forget the whole thing.

Personally, I think occasional fast food, processed foods, or treats are really not a big deal. We live in America, after all. We would have to check out of our culture completely to avoid these things in our diet, and I'm simply not willing to do that.

As the Queen of my Kitchen, I am allowed to bend my own rules, and I think that, too, is healthy.  But bending the rules often leads to a flood of cravings or temptation for convenience, in my children and in me as well. But as Queen, it is my job to keep our family on course, even after a holiday.

And I will be incapable of doing just that, if I cannot remember why I should.

This week's challenge:

Remind yourself why

Have you ever stopped at the grocery store in front of something delicious, thinking,

Why did I stop buying this or eating that?
It looks so good, I just can't remember!

I need help remembering, lots of help, especially when I am tired or hungry.  I need God's help, and I need to be retold what He's already taught me.

So my challenge to you this week, as we continue to learn to be kind to our bodies, is to remind yourself why. Sit down for ten minutes and make a nice long list.

I'll post mine on Wednesday.

Why are you trying to be kind to your body?

If you are stuck, here are some prompts that might inspire you.

God, help me be kind to my body.  And help me to want to. And help me to remember why.

When I am kind to my body, I  ...
When I make healthy choices, I....
When I exercise, I ...
When I have extra energy, I ...
